What does the ED Home Treatment Team (HTT) do?
We provide guidance to young people and their families in their home before, during and after meal times.
We support parents to take a central role during meals, coaching and modelling (showing) appropriate behaviours and feedback to the young person.
We work alongside your CAMHS locality team, who will continue to coordinate the care of the young person and remain responsible for treatment changes.
Our aims
We aim to support young people and parents with the challenges at home by achieving goals that will hopefully prevent the young person from being admitted to hospital or an acute general child and adolescent Mental Health specialist unit (CAMHS Tier 4 Unit).
How long will we work with you?
CAMHS Locality teams will refer you to us for an intensive 6-week intervention.
The frequency of this will be agreed with you on our first visit.
Who are we?
Our team is made up of Mental Health Practitioners (Registered Health Professionals and Nurses) and Support Workers with a range of skills and experience.
Who is the ED Home Treatment Team for?
- Young people up to 18 years old.
- Those at risk of admission to hospital or a to, CAMHS Specialist Eating Disorder unit.
- Those being discharged from hospital who may need further support at home.
- Those whose eating is impacting greatly on their physical health.
When and where do we work?
The Home Treatment Team operates Monday – Sunday, 8am – 8pm including bank holidays. We work across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
What will a home visit look like?
The time during our visits is divided evenly into time before (pre-meal), mealtime and time after (post-meal).
Our vists last 1 hour 30 mins for main meal visits and 1 hour for snack visits.
What will happen during our vists?
Before and after meals we will spend time:
- Getting to know the young person and their family to provide person centered care and build therapeutic relationships.
- Supporting young people and parents / carers to recognise and challenge unhelpful behaviours at mealtimes.
- Looking at motivations for recovery.
- Exploring new and helpful ways of coping with distress; such as distraction techniques and distress tolerance skills.
- Setting goals and helping young people and their families work towards these.
- Working with your locality team, we will provide diet advice and guidance on appropriate portion sizes.
To ensure effectiveness
We provide a smaller core team working around each young person and their family, to ensure a consistent approach.
Parents/carers/appropriate adults will need to be present for all appointments, provide the meals and eat with the young person to help normalise mealtimes.
We expect families and carers to be fully involved in all appointments.
