Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Partnership Trust (AWP) has won a national award after reducing spending on temporary staff by 58%. The Trust was one of six winners at the RLDatix Awards 2024, picking up the Sustainable Organisation Award.
The project ‘Controlling Agency Expenditure & Usage’ focused on managing the cost of agency workers and reducing the Trust’s need to hire high-cost temporary staff at short notice. In August this year AWP spent £1.9 million on agency staffing, compared to £3.1 million in August 2023.
Matthew Page, Chief Operating Officer at AWP, said: “While we value and appreciate our agency staff, being cared for by a team with consistent training and who know the service and the patients helps provide the high standard of care we aspire to. So reducing an over reliance on high cost temporary staff not only saves the Trust money, but helps improve the continuity of the care we provide. This is an example of our commitment to being a great place to work where we can recruit and develop our own substantive staff to meet the needs of our patients and service users.”
The awards were presented at the RLDatix Connected Health & Care Summit, an annual event bringing together the largest community of health and care professionals in service planning, clinical operations, workforce operations and safety from across Europe.
