Callington Road Hospital, part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), has added Cherry, Pear and Apple fruit trees to its grounds, made possible by NHS Forest.
The trees were planted by staff and service users and are part of AWP's efforts to enhance its grounds with nature-based spaces, contributing to a supportive and therapeutic environment for all. Over time, the fruit they produce will be used in ward food groups, promoting sustainable practices and enriching culinary activities.
Luke Champion, AWP's Energy and Sustainability Manager stated: “This is a great example of enhancing our green space with a selection of fruit trees which can be enjoyed by our service users, staff and visitors to Callington Road Hospital. We are very pleased to plant these trees and we all look forward to enjoying the fruit from them for many years”.
In addition to complementing existing allotments, this initiative provides environmental and community benefits, aligning with AWP's commitment to greener practices.
NHS Forest is an organisation dedicated to promoting nature-positive health services. It supports sites in planning, planting and managing trees, woodlands and green spaces to create habitats for wildlife and sustainable social spaces for communities. Their mission is to build stronger, healthier and more sustainable environments.
