Local carers who support individuals with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and/or autism were recently honoured at a special event organised by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP) NHS Trust. The event, held to recognise the invaluable contributions of carers, offered a day of celebration, relaxation and support.
The 'Let's Hear Carers' event featured a variety of wellbeing activities, including Tai Chi and pebble painting, along with a free lunch and a raffle offering prizes generously donated by local businesses. Attendees were also treated to insightful speakers and entertainment, including a special guest appearance by comedian Angie Belcher, who highlighted the power of humour in fostering connection within the caring community.
Sarah Jones, Director of Nursing and Quality at AWP, expressed her gratitude to the carers, stating: "Carers make a massive difference to the lives of the people they care for. We recognise that caring for or supporting someone with a mental health condition can often feel isolating. Our 'Let's Hear Carers' event provided an opportunity for carers to take a break, connect with others, and access the support and information available in their local communities".
The event also featured representatives from local voluntary and carer organisations, who provided information on the wide range of services available to support carers in their vital roles.
Susan Woodland, Patient and Carer Experience Co-ordinator at AWP, said: "Carers are the backbone of support for many in our community. This event was a small way to say thank you and remind them that they are not alone. We want them to feel valued, supported, and empowered. This event was for carers to connect, listen and celebrate and I believe they did".
