Everyone has basic human rights. These rights are based on many values, including:
- dignity
- fairness
- equality
- independence
Your human rights can never be taken away, although they can sometimes be restricted if, for example, a person breaks the law. In the UK, our human rights are protected by the Human Rights Act 1998.
The Human Rights Act has had a huge impact on the way people with mental health problems, learning disabilities and dementia are treated.
Those who provide mental health services, like AWP, have a duty to treat people with dignity and to respect people's human rights in everything they do.
